Charting the Course: An Assessment of Assets and Opportunities on the Lower Detroit River

As part of its Greater Detroit American Heritage River Initiative, Metropolitan Affairs Coalition produced Charting the Course, a poster/map that highlights 73 facilities, assets, and project opportunities along the Detroit River from Southwest Detroit to Brownstown Township.  This publication is a detailed, colorful map that numerous government entities, schools, libraries, and individuals have requested across Michigan and United States.

Charting the Course was honored with the “Outstanding Planning Project Award for a Special Community Initiative” from the Michigan Society of Planners (now Michigan Association of Planners).  Charting the Course was also honored by the American Society of Landscape Architects in recognition for its professional achievement.

Charting the Course
was developed as:

  • A guide for helping identify potential project concepts along the lower Detroit River that may become Greater Detroit American Heritage River Initiative priorities and the subject of a potential later phase of effort to help bring those opportunities closer to fruition.

  • A tool and visual aid that will be useful to all community stakeholders interested in collaborating to improve the lower Detroit Riverfront.
