Old Corduroy Road Remains
In 1812, U.S. troops and the Michigan Militia crossed the Huron River via raft and built a log road over the mucky wetlands of the river’s mouth. With improvements, it later became known as U.S. Turnpike, River Road, and Jefferson. Though buried under gravel and new road construction, a 1,500-foot portion of the original corduroy road is preserved here. Logs are exposed to paddlers heading north under the Jefferson Road Bridge during low water.
